Astrid Cripps is an artist who lives in Gloucestershire. She enjoyed art at school in her native Stockport, but started painting in earnest about 25 years ago, when she joined the art class in Tewkesbury Methodist Hall with Wesley Hemmings and his wife Pam, painting in oils. She was then lucky enough to be able to attend a crash weekend course in portraiture with Eric Harper. Jan Crowd at Cheltenham Art College introduced her to watercolours, which she further pursued with Joe Wilkes at Apperley Art Group. When Peter Lord moved to Deerhurst, he introduced her to pastels, which she found very exciting and has been her preferred medium for many years. More recently she has been dabbling in acrylics
An unusual and unique feature of her work is the adaptation of many of her major pictures as greetings cards. These almost always feature an original verse written with her inspiration by the subject. These have proved to be very popular.
She considers herself very lucky that her pictures have sold well, and she is often commissioned to produce individual works for private clients. Sometimes these are unusual, and have included a house sign on slate, a trompe l’oeil mural, and another on the boot lid of a VW Beetle!
Astrid is a past Chairman of Tewkesbury Art Society, and is an Exhibiting Member of Gloucestershire Society of Artists. She plays piano accordion for barn dances with very popular Amazing Matchless Band. She also joins forces with husband PETER to play as a duo, and is on the committee of Glosfolk, keeping traditional music alive and kicking in the county.
